How to do The Florida Keys in Two Days.

First trip to Key West at 3. #MermaidLife

Steve and I had an awesome trip in the Florida Keys. After finishing Netflix’s Bloodline, I was DYING to visit…so we flew down MDW and made it happen.
We were able to stop in Boca to see one of our most favorite girls ever, Avery and then trucked on down to Miami for the night, in an adorable Airbnb. We got up the next morning to travel down the 100+ miles of the Overseas Highway, making stops along the way to fish and snorkel the clear blue waters. The Keys are extraordinary and I highly recommend everybody to travel to this U.S. treasure atleast once in your lifetime.

Top 10 things to do on the way & in Key West

1. On your way to Key West, stop in Islamorada for 1/2 the day to fish & snorkel

2. Get a Strawberry Daiquiri from a sidewalk bar, then walk up Duval Street to watch the sunset at Mallory Square.keywest3

3. Get Conch Fritters from the vendors at Mallory Square and enjoy the most breathtaking sunset of your life.
(Chocolate covered key lime pie is also a must-eat when in town.)

4. Visit Ernest Hemingway’s house.
It is stunning and is home to a bunch of polydactyl cats! (6-10 toed cats!)

5. Smathers Beach is a pretty hard way to start your day 😉
We went in the morning, met a local having Hennessy for breakfast, swam and sunbathed.

6. Get lunch at the Southernmost Beach Cafe.
The food is awesome and the location is gorgeous. If there is a wait, just order a drink at the bar and walk around on the beach or walkway to the ocean and enjoy the serenity.

7. Explore. There is so much eye porn in Key West if you love a unique beach town as much as I do. The charming beach homes have been home to well-knowns such as Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Jimmy Buffet, Shel Silverstein, Truman Capote, Madonna and Ralph Lauren.

8. Find your street!

9. Camp on the beach, at least one night! (Boyd’s Campground)
The campground we slept at had a shower house and full running bathrooms within walking distance, so it was more like glamping. I haven’t camped except for music festivals and this was a piece of cake. The wind made it a bit difficult to set the tent up, but luckily my boyfriend is a total outdoorsman and was able to keep things running smoothly. Waking up on the beach to a Key West sunrise is mesmerizing!

10. When leaving, stop in Key Largo on your way back North for dinner.
The live music, colorful tables and seafood fare drew us to Bayside Restaurant. It was another epic Florida Keys sunset and the perfect way to end our Memorial Day excursion.

  3. Love the photo of the Southernmost Beach Cafe & the tropical drink stand. I’ve had drinks at both places too many times. Another good spot for lunch in Key Largo is The Fish House. We try and stop on our way down to KW.
